We are so totally in the single digits phase of the move. We've got one week left before a truck parks all up in here. Crazy. I've been getting things out of the house like a madwoman. We're getting less stuff and more space, which is a winning combo.
I also scanned some stuff, including an invitation to Nick's college graduation party and an old pic of me and Estro.
They were completely at ease from the start, and their between-song banter was hilarious. They kept fighting about who has better Mexican food: Los Angeles or San Francisco.
Mark dedicated songs to people all night, one was to his friend Kristen. The bass player countered the dedication with "Not the other Kristen. She's bullshit." and Mark repeated his dedication as if nothing happened and then launched into the song.
His last dedication of the evening was actually to Nick and me and our "beautiful dog Estro." I was touched. A song for the schnauzer.
Had the loveliest Thanksgiving this year, hope you did too! Had the best home-cooked food with family, friends and dogs. We continued our tradition at our friend's house with the deep-fried turkey and everyone brought something delicious to share. Nick made some incredible homemade mushroom ravioli with three kinds of sauces, it was just amazing. He rolled out the pasta and all. I made some hot spiced nuts, recipe here.
After dinner, Nick and I were hanging out on the deck and we heard a splash. There was Estro, standing in the koi pond, head well above water and stock still. It was dark out, she probably thought the water was solid ground, but got quite the surprise. "I'll rescue you!" I told her. Bundled her up in a towel and she was all better in no time. That story is going to stick, "Remember the Thanksgiving when Estro went swimming?"
Nick and I will soon be off on our 4-day family vacation to Sea Ranch, the seaside community that's "internationally acclaimed for environmentally sensitive architecture and planning." But we're going mostly to reenact the above scene with Estro looking at deer from the living room.
If you click the photo, you can see the deer's butt just under the birdhouse. What you can't see is another deer and two bunnies, like in a Disney movie.
The house we're renting is conveniently 100 miles north of San Francisco, and not too far from a slew of wineries where Sonoma and Mendocino meet. Navarro Vineyards is one of our favorites, no relation to Dave.
We go to Sea Ranch about every year, and each time we have to eat at the best restaurant we've been to, pretty much ever. It's called St. Orres and the chef is named Rosemary.
With Nick being gimped out still, there's no way I'm getting him to horseback ride on the beach like we did before. Nick, being six foot four, got the biggest and oldest horse and was convinced that, "My horse hates me!"
His horse had to be the leader and he wouldn't listen to Nick. Meanwhile, my horse was adorable and named Jewel. She had just been in a parade and still had multicolored glitter in her mane. Jewel liked me and responded to vocal commands like, "Wait" and "Okay."
The best memory of that horseback ride was Nick forgetting to sunscreen his hands. He ended up with a sunburn in pink strips from his wrists to his knuckles, the exact shape of '80s Madonna gloves.
I just hope that I didn't use up all my luck preparing for this trip. I went to Macy's and bought the first swimsuit I tried on. And no, I can't believe it either. Thank you, Gottex.
And now, a different horse.
