Excellent at-a-glance coverage of last night's Project Runway is here.
At the cruel, cruel hour of 9AM in New York City today, September 15, the Olympus Fashion Week runway show for Project Runway 3 happened. The Final 4 designers showed their real life collections in real time.
The television show will be edited and aired at a future date, but if you want to look now, you can. Yeah!
Spoiler alert for Project Runway here...if you've been watching the show, I'm sure you're peeved right now, right along with me. It's so wrong, yet I will still watch. Which makes it even more wrong.
I've devoted some of my finest television viewing for one hour per week for what, 10 weeks now, visibly awaiting for the minimally talented nuisance Vincent to be voted off the show. Last week, it finally happened. Hooray! And this was on the heels of my 2nd least favorite designer, Angela, being auf'ed, so I had my cake and was eating it, with icing.
I was ready, willing and able to see the Final 5 designers compete. What a relief! No more throwing my hands up in front of my face to cover the screen, like when you watch a horror movie. They were down to the strong creative abilities of the Final 5 designers, of which the Final 3 will show full collections at Fashion Week. If you're me, this is fun!
But no sooner had I breathed my full-on sigh of relief to never have to witness the whining of those 2 designers ever again as long as I shall live, somebody at Bravo! decided to bring back *both* of them. I'm livid that they shared the screentime with those who deserved it most. Namely Kayne. It was his last show, and he deserved to have gone out with a bang.
My guess was that he wasn't going to make it to the Final 3, not because he can't make surprising and amazing clothes. He's just so specialized with his pageant gown expertise that I didn't think that the judges were seeing enough of him doing casual, everyday clothes. Kayne's dress last night had rather questionable dolman sleeves, an oddly short length, with creepy Frankenstein stitching on the back. But Jeffrey's dress was much more elimination-friendly. It was its own fresh hell, a walking nightmare that no one would wear.
My money is on Michael to make it to Fashion Week. Here's his dress below. And guess what? He's straight.
Never thought I would like one of Laura's designs on Project Runway, but I do. The melted dulce de leche color is seriously lacking (although it was surprisingly flattering to her skin tone) and this photo doesn't do her or the dress any justice, but it moved well and looked great on video. One strap is twisted and one is not, and there are miles of fabric that cross over into any kind of belt formation. The live auction is here.
It was very Donna Karan in that easy jersey, comfortable yet polished kind of way. Good for her. Although I suspect she was freezing on the plane. It would have been great to see a contrasting wrap jacket to make a complete outfit. Say, the same jersey but in a strong color like bittersweet chocolate, turquoise or a superdark berry.
The best part of the show was saying sayonara to Angela and her relentless rosettes. It was a cruel way to be eliminated, but now she can say that she's been to Paris via First Class.
First off--rather, the second person kicked off--this season's show got a raw deal. His name is Malan, and he's the only designer who auditioned for all three seasons. He wasn't chosen for the first season, he was chosen for the second but declined, and in the third season, they only let him go as far as two episodes. Bad choice, Bravo!
Nobody ever said that reality television is fair, but this guy's talent and weird charisma demanded far more screentime. He was a kooky cartoon vampire and he could draw. His accent is unreal but then, everyone has two faces. One that you're born with and the other that you make. At least he had undeniable style and taste.
Much more than that Angela who wears hideous flared hooped miniskirts at 33 and tries to emulate Julia Roberts in the most painful way. Why, oh why, wasn't Michael Kors on the judge's panel to save Malan this time? He would have seen the potential.
And p.s. What was Vera Wang wearing?
